How an Accident Restored My Calm and Helped Me Overcome Anxiety

how an Accident Restored My Calm and Helped me overcome Anxiety

Sometimes the greatest lessons in life come at the most unexpected moments. For me, one such lesson came during a motorbike accident in the Philippines, when I realized that the anxiety that had controlled me for years no longer had power over me. This accident became a turning point in my life and taught me how to remain calm, even in the most stressful situations.

A Rainy Morning on Siquijor Island

It was a rainy morning on the island of Siquijor. I had planned to go snorkeling with friends that day, but everything seemed to go wrong. My internet wasn’t working, my SIM card had expired, and I still needed to buy a raincoat. After a chaotic morning, I hopped on my motorbike, determined to make it on time. Despite the rain, I rode fast, as I usually did. But the conditions were treacherous: with wet sunglasses, poor visibility, and slippery roads, the danger was increasing.

Then, it happened. A stray dog suddenly darted in front of my bike, and instinctively, I tried to swerve to avoid it. In that moment, I lost control. My motorbike skidded, and I tumbled across the road, my flip-flops flying in all directions. When I tried to stand, I noticed my feet were completely cut open. Within seconds, helpful locals surrounded me, and before I knew it, an ambulance was on its way.

In those brief moments—between the shock of the accident and the ride to the hospital—something remarkable happened. I didn’t panic. Where I would have once succumbed to anxiety and stress, I remained calm. Of course, I was shaken, but I had regained my composure and accepted the situation for what it was.

The Power of Acceptance

When I arrived at the hospital, it turned out the injuries weren’t serious. I only had a few cuts that needed cleaning. The doctor and I even cracked a few jokes. I called my girlfriend to reassure her, and although I didn’t know what the next steps would be, I felt an unexpected sense of control.

What I learned from this accident was that resisting fear often only makes the problem worse. In the past, I would have been overwhelmed by panic, worrying about everything that could go wrong. But during this accident, I discovered that when you accept fear and allow it to exist, it loses its power. This was a huge lesson for me. Fear and panic are not invincible—they are temporary and only have control over you if you resist them.

Welcoming Fear Instead of Fighting It

Instead of fighting against my fears, I began to welcome them. When my motorbike went down, I knew instinctively that panic wouldn’t help me. Instead, I took a deep breath, as I had learned from my cold-water plunges and meditations, and I surrendered to the moment. I allowed myself to accept the situation as it was. This gave me an unprecedented inner peace, even amidst the chaos.

Fear: The Real Enemy Is Resistance

Over the years, I’ve realized that resisting fear is the biggest mistake you can make. The harder I tried to avoid or suppress my anxieties, the stronger they became. The accident taught me that when I simply allowed fear to be present without fighting it, it naturally faded away. It was as if I finally understood that fear can exist, but I have the choice whether or not to engage with it.

Finding Calm in Chaos

This lesson was especially meaningful for me because anxiety and panic had held me captive for so many years. For the first time in my life, I felt stronger than my fears—not because they were gone, but because I had learned how to handle them. The key wasn’t in avoiding difficult situations but in how I responded to them. The accident in the Philippines showed me that I had the strength to remain calm, even when everything around me seemed to be falling apart.

This insight extended beyond that single moment on the wet road. It changed my entire outlook on life. I realized that I am always in control of how I respond to situations, even when the outcome is out of my hands. The ability to stay calm in stressful situations has made me stronger, not just physically but mentally as well.

A Life-Changing Lesson

The lessons I learned during this accident are now deeply ingrained in how I live my life. Where I used to be afraid of fear itself, I’ve now learned to embrace it. Fear no longer holds power over me. The calm I found during the accident has shown me that I am far stronger than I ever thought and that I am capable of handling anything that comes my way.

The bandage is still wrapped around my feet.

This realization has helped me keep moving forward, growing stronger, and facing the most difficult moments of my life head-on. It’s not about avoiding challenges but about finding the peace and calm within yourself, even in the middle of the storm. That’s the lesson I took from this accident, and it has changed my life forever.

This experience has shown me that even in the darkest moments, there is light. And that calmness—that trust in yourself—is the key to overcoming anxiety and panic. It has not only helped me during the accident but also in the rest of my life.
